DR REUBEN WILCOCK’S ‘THE JOURNEY OF A UNIVERSITY SPINOUT’ WORKSHOP ANNOUNCED FOR NUCLEUS 2015

We’re pleased to announce that Dr Reuben Wilcock, Principal Enterprise Fellow for the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering at the University of Southampton, and Co-Founder of Future Worlds and Joulo, will be presenting a workshop at Nucleus on Thursday 19th November.

Dr Wilcock is passionate about creating global impact through the commercialisation of university research and turning such research into practical applications and he will share this passion with us at Nucleus 2015.

During the workshop, Dr Wilcock will outline his journey as a university spinout, focusing on how he founded a company and took it to acquisition.  In 2013, smart energy spinout, Joulo Ltd, was co-founded by Dr Wilcock and Professor Alex Rogers. Their product was a low cost USB device and web platform which gave utility customers personalised advice on how to save energy and make their homes more comfortable. Joulo was piloted by three of the UK’s big six energy companies and was tipped by Centrica in 2013 as ‘The UK’s brightest tech startup’.  Joulo was later acquired in 2014 by Quby, Europe’s leading developer of smart thermostats and energy displays.

Dr Wilcock also leads the Future Worlds initiative which he created after seeing the value of connecting university researchers to mentors, investors and entrepreneurs. Working with co-founder Joyce Lewis, he raised funds for a dedicated team, professional studio and engaging website that he hopes will serve as a benchmark for universities across the world. Through Future Worlds, Dr Wilcock can introduce entrepreneurs to investors and mentors who offer completely free advice. He can help refine the value proposition behind the idea, and create a compelling pitch ready to be publicised on the Future Worlds web platform.

Dr Reuben Wilcock commented: “Being part of the Nucleus 2015 event is an exciting opportunity to share my experiences with budding entrepreneurs and I look forward to meeting everyone and hopefully inspiring others to tap into their entrepreneurial spirit!”
