PROFESSOR PETER SMITH, DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE FOR LIFE SCIENCES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON IS TO CHAMPION ACADEMIC AND INDUSTRY COLLABORATIONS AT NUCLEUS 2015

We’re pleased to announce that Professor Peter Smith, Director of the Institute for Life Sciences at the University of Southampton, will be a keynote speaker at Nucleus 2015.

His talk will explore the opportunities in interdisciplinary life sciences and how academia and industry collaborate.

Hampshire is a region full of ideas, a place where scientists and academics are encouraged to thrive. At the heart of all this clever stuff is the University of Southampton: ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide, and recognised as a global centre for excellence in research and education.

From global warming to life-threatening infections, the Institute for Life Sciences at the University undertakes world-leading research focusing on today’s key challenges. Working in collaboration with different disciplines and with other universities, private industry and the public sector, the Institute sees science as a means to achieve real-life benefits.

Peter Smith’s key interests lie in monitoring cells, in health and disease, by targeting the dynamics of living systems. He has a clear vision for the future, wanting to dissolve the boundaries between learning and commerce to boost the regional economy and develop the potential for clusters of expertise. While the Institute is facilitating interdisciplinary research, enabling researchers to bring their different perspectives together to find solutions, he is also championing closer working relationships with local businesses and saw Nucleus as a fantastic opportunity to drive this.

Peter Smith commented: “I’m very much looking forward to being part of the Nucleus 2015 event which is helping to promote life sciences in an exciting way. It is important for the University of Southampton to be involved with such events as they will help us position ourselves as global leaders in this exciting research area.”
